LDT 506 My Evaluator Competencies: Strengths, Growth Areas, and a Path Forward

LDT 506 | March 24, 2025 Introduction Evaluation, when done thoughtfully, goes beyond measurement and supports growth, equity, and accountability. As I reflect on the evaluator competencies defined by Stevahn, King, Ghere, and Minnema (2005), along with those outlined by the American Evaluation Association (AEA, 2018) and the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (IBSTPI, 2012), I recognize that evaluation is task grounded in ethics, values, and technical precision. It requires accurate data analysis and the ability to navigate interpersonal dynamics, resulting in meaningful communication and collaboration. My self-assessment in this class offers a snapshot of where I currently stand as an evaluator and clarifies some areas I need to develop further. Where I Stand as an Evaluator Based on my self-assessment results, I consider myself at an intermediate level approximately a 3 on a 6-point scale. While I bring experience in instructional design and ...

EDP 540 Applying Learning Theory In ISD

Applying Learning Theory in  Instructional Design Introduction Learning theories are important in instructional design as they provide a framework for creating engaging and effective learning experiences. As Mayer (2009) emphasizes, "people learn better from words and pictures than from words alone." This blog post will reflect on how I applied various learning theories throughout EDP 540, demonstrating their impact on engagement, retention, and instructional effectiveness. Module 1 - Gamifying Learning with Behaviorism Problem: The existing training was a static presentation that lacked engagement. Learners struggled to navigate course and quiz components effectively. Solution: Created a gamified learning experience incorporating points, badges, and leaderboards to drive engagement. Used positive reinforcement, such as immediate feedback, to encourage learner motivation. Integrated progress mechanics to unlock new challenges incrementally. Reflection & Key Takea...

LDT 504 - My Storyline Experiences and the Future of eLearning

Over the past few weeks, developing an eLearning module has been both an exciting and challenging process. I’ve encountered successes, frustrations, and numerous learning opportunities that have shaped my understanding of the design and development process. In this reflection, I’ll share what went well, the obstacles I faced, and how I envision eLearning evolving over the next decade as technology continues to transform the landscape. One highlight of this project was creating a clear, structured pathway for learners using Articulate Storyline. This tool’s ‘Story View’ helped me visually map out the flow of the course, which made navigation and content structuring intuitive. Translating my newly learned Twine wireframe into a fully functional, interactive module was rewarding. With Storyline, each piece fell into place relatively smoothly, especially as I began setting up basic navigation.   Another success was audio production. Having produced audio in my workplace previously, I w...

Reflections on Digital Learning: Experiences and Insights

Over the last few years, my professional growth has been deeply intertwined with various forms of eLearning, driven by the necessity to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. This continuous learning process is not merely a personal endeavor but a strategic approach to maintaining and elevating my team’s capabilities in a fast-evolving landscape. One of the most rewarding digital learning experiences I’ve encountered was through YouTube video tutorials for Adobe Captivate, carefully crafted by Paul Wilson (2024). These tutorials stood out because they made hands-on activities easily accessible, allowing me to deeply engage with the material. Paul’s modules presented real-world scenarios that enabled immediate application of the concepts, leading to a deeper understanding and better retention. The interactivity and implicit feedback loop, provided by following along with the material in Adobe Captivate, made it an engaging experience that set a high standard for effective eLea...

Learning design, as I define it, is the deliberate crafting of educational experiences that are universally accessible, deeply engaging, interactive, and visually appealing, all aimed at fostering an enriching learning experience. Effective learning design is fundamentally characterized by meticulous attention to both user interface and user experience, elements that ensure learners are not merely absorbing content but are seamlessly guided through their educational journey. Having been subjected as a learner to the shortcomings of e-Learning over the past two decades, ranging from outdated graphics and lackluster functionality to outright dull content, I am driven to exceed these standards and deliver superior learning experiences. Technology has been a critical driving force in this endeavor, offering innovative methods to enhance and reinvigorate our educational practices, thereby significantly improving the learning opportunities for my audience.   The role of technology in lea...

LDT 502, Module 7 Evaluation

Introduction:  In this discussion, I will present the journey of our group, named Team Wilmington, in its trials and tribulations through the instructional design processes, as I perceive them.     I highlight these points as my own perspective, while also underscoring and respecting other viewpoints and life experiences. With this said, I understand my own viewpoints as a narrow piece of a much more global perspective. This group project implored me to think more broadly through the phases of ADDIE, rather than from my normal isolated perspective, as a practitioner in e-Learning production. Beginning on Task Analysis : When our journey through this project began, attention was given to executing a detailed content and task analysis, with each step being meticulously outlined. However, an unexpected challenge was encountered in the alignment with our intended audience, something seemingly illustrated by the child-centered YouTube example used in the course materials which...

My Goals as a Growing Instructional Designer

As I settle into my Saturday morning routine and begin to start this future-reflective assignment, I understand its purpose to clarify the goals I am presently setting, thereby necessitating that I capture my current circumstances. Let me illustrate where I am currently at in my life as a learning designer.   In my professional life, I hold the role of a Training Analyst in the Government sector. The title "Training Analyst" encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. I find myself sifting through vast amounts of compliance and learning project data, managing functions within a Learning Management System, and leading project management efforts with groups of physicians and policy-making teams through a formal design process. The development phase is equally demanding, involving working on a computer with limited performance and using tools like Adobe Captivate, Audacity, and Photoshop. Simultaneously, I handle administrative tasks tied to operational obligations and challen...
